Taifa Stars History

Tanzania has struggled in both African and World Cup qualifications for over 40 years, having qualified for the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. The Taifa Stars put together their greatest performance in 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, defeating Burkina Faso twice and finishing just three points behind group champions Senegal. Tanzania won the CECAFA Cup for the third consecutive year in 2010.

A 1–0 triumph against South Africa in the 2017 COSAFA Cup Quarter-finals was a recent accomplishment. Tanzania, however, fell 2–4 to Zambia in the Semi-finals. Following that, Tanzania defeated Lesotho 4–2 in a penalty shootout after extra time finished in a goalless stalemate in the third-place playoff. Tanzania’s best football success in many years was coming in third place.

Tanzania Taifa Stars National Team 0 – 2 Algeria National Team

Tanzania defeated East African rival Uganda 3–0 on March 24, 2019, to reach the Africa Cup of Nations finals for the first time in 39 years. The Taifa Stars, being the worst team in the group, lost all three Group C matches in the Finals, as expected. Tanzania qualified for the African Nations Championship for the second time and defeated Burundi in the 2022 World Cup qualifications a few months later.
